Subject Headings Moodle Assignment- 12th Grade Library Aides

The object of this lesson was to provide an interactive, online assignment for students enrolled in the Library Science elective.  As a result of the lesson students understand how subject headings help to identify relevant sources in a library's online catalog; knowledge that is directly applied to the students' duties as Library Aides.  Using Moodle open-source software, I created a self-directed, modular lesson, which includes: links to resources, online activities, a creative writing activity, and a formative assessment.

Creative Nonfiction: Writing college application essays-
11th Grade IB English

In collaboration with the IB English cohort of teachers, I designed and presented a lesson to a class of 11th grade students in advance of the college application process to highlight the Common Application, the college admissions review process, and the purpose of the application essay.  Students wrote their own college application essay in response to a self-chosen prompt and then work in pairs to peer edit each other's essays.  After reviewing materials provided by the teachers and various articles on the topic, I created a multi-media Google presentation to inform students and to promote interaction between students.

Introduction to the DHSLC website and databases-
10th Grade English

The object of this 20 minute research lesson was to help students understand how to find and evaluate information through the Dexter High School Learning Commons website portal in order to use that information for a research paper paper on a current conflict in the continent of Africa.  In preparation for this lesson I collaborated with the 10th grade English teachers and designed a webpage addressing the steps of the research process using edublogs (powered by WordPress).

Powersearching With Google
7th Grade Latin

The object of this lesson was to help students understand best practices for searching for information with the Google search engine. Students were presented with tips and tricks through interactive online activities to find out how search works, how to assess the parts of a url, what keywords to enter into the search box, about available search tools, and what Google automatically does to assist with searches. Students were able to try different techniques in order to determine what was best suited to their assignment needs.  This lesson has been adapted for different grades and subjects.

Ancient Civilizations of West Africa Podcast-

5th Grade

The object of this 4-lesson literacy and technology unit was to lead students through the process of locating and evaluating print and digital resources in order to share that information by writing and producing a group podcast about a specific Ancient West African civilization.  In preparation for this unit I collaborated with the 5th grade teachers and created a screencast addressing the steps necessary to add music to a podcast recorded in GarageBand.

Common Sense Media- Using Social Media for Good
K-4th Grades

The goal of the unit was to empower students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world. This three lesson interactive unit explained ideas, techniques, and plans of action for students to use while accessing information on the web.  Lessons for 3rd and 4th grade students included participatory online activities that focused on the responsibilities of a good digital citizen, how to protect oneself from identity theft, and what to do when someone uses mean language on the internet. Lessons for K through 2nd grade students included participatory online activities that focused on how to go places safely on the computer, what information is safe to share online, and what students should do if someone is mean to them online.

Symbols of Democracy: The Liberty Bell-
1st Grade

The object of this 3-lesson literacy and technology unit was to help students express a newly formed understanding of the Liberty Bell through multiple texts including nonfiction books, primary sources, and videos.  After the presentation of new information and the sharing of prior knowledge, students developed new skills in KidPix (a computer drawing tool) to draw an image, insert text, save, and print their own representation of the Liberty Bell.  Students later studied other U.S.A. symbols of democracy including the White House, the Capitol Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the flag of the U.S.A. eventually creating a printed portfolio of their work.
